Exploring the Scenic Qinghai-Tibet Railway: From Xining to Lhasa

The world-renowned Qinghai-Tibet railway is truly a remarkable feat of engineering, capturing the minds and hearts of both locals and tourists alike. Spanning a distance of over 1,900 kilometres, this railway adventure begins its journey from the vibrant city of Xining, winding its way through towering mountains, lush meadows, and mystical Tibetan plateaus, before finally reaching the breathtaking city of Lhasa.

Xining: City of vibrant culture

Xining, a hidden gem in Qinghai Province, captivates visitors with its charm and cultural significance. The renowned Kumbum Monastery is a testament to the rich history and religious heritage of the area. The monastery’s grandeur and spirituality, along with its Great Hall of Meditation and Hall of Butter Sculpture, attract Buddhists from around the world. Xining also offers breathtaking landscapes and a fusion of Tibetan, Han Chinese, and Muslim cultures. Its vibrant markets, bustling streets, and diverse cuisine provide a sensory exploration of local traditions. Xining is a gateway to a world of wonder and discovery, making it a destination not to be missed.

As the train sets off from Xining, passengers are immediately greeted by the awe-inspiring beauty of the Tibetan Plateau. Vast expanses of golden grasslands, dotted with grazing yaks and sheep, stretch as far as the eye can see. The pure, crisp air fills the lungs, invigorating the senses and preparing travellers for the enchanting journey ahead.

Qinghai Lake

Qinghai Lake in China’s Qinghai Province is a captivating body of water. Unlike Utah’s Great Salt Lake, it is less salty and teeming with life. The lake sustains a variety of fish species that create a mesmerizing sight. Twice a year, the lake becomes a bustling hub for migrating birds, including cormorants, geese, cranes, and swans. The summer landscape is accompanied by the calls of yak herds, adding rustic charm. The lake is nourished by over twenty rivers and streams but lacks an outflow, relying on evaporation to maintain its water level.

Exploring Qinghai Lake reveals hidden gems and a sense of tranquillity. Witnessing seasonal bird migrations, marvelling at fish diversity, or simply enjoying the serene surroundings leaves a lasting impression. Nature’s beauty reigns supreme at Qinghai Lake, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in the wonders of the natural world.

Delingha

Delingha, located in China’s Qinghai Province, is a captivating city boasting a rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking natural wonders. One of its hidden gems is Crook Lake, a stunning body of water nestled in the heart of Delingha. Surrounded by hills and greenery, the lake’s crystal-clear waters reflect the sky above, creating a picturesque sight. Legend has it that a mythical creature resides in the lake, capable of granting wishes to those pure of heart. Crook Lake offers activities like fishing and peaceful boat rides. Nearby, Tuosu Lake is renowned for its beauty, with shimmering waters reflecting an array of colours. Both lakes are valuable ecological habitats, and efforts have been made to preserve them. Delingha promises an unforgettable experience for travellers seeking natural beauty, cultural heritage, and tranquillity.

Golmud Station

Golmud’s primary industries are minerals, oil, and chemicals. However, to visitors, Golmud serves as a transportation hub. It facilitates traffic from China’s eastern and northern cities to the only highway and railway that lead southwest to Lhasa. The surrounding landscape of Golmud has an almost lunar appearance, with a treeless terrain due to its elevation of nearly 10,000 feet.

Hoh Xil Nature Reserve

As the journey progresses, the train passes through the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most remote and pristine areas on Earth. This untouched wilderness is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including the elusive Tibetan antelope, wild yaks, and rare bird species. The train’s presence in this untouched sanctuary is a testament to the railway’s commitment to preserving the natural environment while allowing travellers to appreciate its wonders.

Qarhan Salt Lake,

750 kilometres away from Xining lies a mesmerizing sight, the mighty Himalayas. The train journey to Lhasa on the Qinghai Tibet Railway unveils the anticipation and excitement for this natural wonder. The snow-capped peaks stretch as far as the eye can see, commanding respect and admiration. The train slows down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty. As you continue, the train showcases picturesque valleys and winding rivers, offering uninterrupted views of the Himalayas. The railway’s engineering feat overcame immense challenges and stands as a testament to human determination. This journey offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience, etching the boundless beauty and resilience of our world into your memory.

Yuzhu Peak

The train will stop at Yuzhu Peak station, located at an altitude of 4160m. Yuzhu Peak, the ideal mountain for entry-level mountaineering, offers a clear view of its summit, which stands at 6178m. As the highest point in the eastern section of Mt. Kunlun, Yuzhu Peak’s topographical features, including its wind-eroded rock face and gentle slope, prevent avalanches. Due to its diverse topography, this destination has maintained its popularity as a training ground for mountaineers for many years.

Kekexili Nature Reserve

After passing Yuzhu Peak, the trains enter the renowned Kekexili nature reserve, the least populated and isolated region in the northwestern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. This reserve is home to various wildlife species including Tibetan antelope, wild yak, and wild Tibetan donkey. The train then arrives at Tuotuo He River station, where tourists can appreciate the natural scenery and cultural heritage of Tuotuo River. This is the first town located away from the source of the Yangtze River. Every May, pregnant Tibetan antelope migrate to the Kekexili Nature Reserve to give birth to their young. To facilitate their movement, a tunnel is constructed under the bridge.

Tuotuo River

Located at 4533 meters, the Tuotuo River in the Yangtze River source region is a breathtaking sight. Its mild climate, nestled between the Kunlun and Tangula Passes, attracts nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Flowing with determination through the rugged Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the river’s crystal-clear waters reflect the vibrant flora and fauna. Despite the high altitude, the Tuotuo River enjoys a temperate climate, creating a diverse ecosystem. Wildlife thrives here, from Tibetan antelopes to snow leopards and various bird species. For thrill-seekers, riveting rafting expeditions take you through captivating landscapes. As the sun sets and the wind whispers through the valleys, the harmony of nature and mankind is truly felt. The Tuotuo River is a hidden gem that promises to fulfill your desires for solace or adventure. Immerse yourself in its remarkable beauty and let nature reign supreme.

As the train ascends, passengers are treated to panoramic views of snow-capped peaks that pierce the sky, creating a majestic backdrop for this unforgettable experience. The train navigates through tunnels and over bridges, allowing passengers to soak in the beauty and grandeur of the surrounding landscape.

Tsonag Lake

After entering Nagqu prefecture, the train reveals a unique natural beauty to riders. Tourists can catch a glimpse of Tsonag Lake, one of China’s highest freshwater lakes, situated just meters away from the railway. The lake resembles a precious mirror, and travellers can enjoy the vast Qiangtang prairie, one of the top five pastures in the northern Tibet plateau and home to numerous rare wildlife. Tsonag Lake, an alpine freshwater lake, sits at an altitude of 4650m and covers an area of over 400 km.
