The theme for this year’s Lhasa Shoton Festival is “Charming Shoton·Happy Lhasa”. To improve the performance and impact, the Publicity Culture Group has invited renowned domestic hosts and artists. During the festival, the ancient city of Lhasa will display its beauty and distinctive cultural heritage to people of diverse ethnicities across the nation via the Internet.
The opening ceremony of the Shoton Festival combines tradition and modernity, featuring national first-class actor Huang Bingqiang from the Chinese Peking Opera Company, Jiangsu Kunqu opera artist Song Bofan, and renowned singers Jamyang Dolma, Yadong, Yangchenma, Tsering Lhamo, and Norbu Samdup. The performance includes songs, dances, Tibetan opera, Peking opera, Kunqu opera, street dance, and more. Programs like “Nangma Ancient Rhyme” and “Hundred Years of Shoton” are presented in a semi-real stage art format, seamlessly blending tradition and modernity, inheritance and innovation, both online and offline. It is a literary and artistic feast that connects history and the future.
During the 7-day Shoton Festival holiday, in addition to the wonderful opening ceremony performances, the Shoton Festival organizing committee also prepared many cultural, tourism and sports meals for the citizens.
Watching Tibetan opera
Performances of traditional Tibetan opera will be held in Zongjiao Lukang Park from August 16th to August 20th, from 11:00 to 18:30 daily. Tibetan opera teams from Chengguan District, Doilungdeqing District, Dazi District, and Linzhou County will showcase their special performances, showcasing the city’s success in inheriting, protecting, innovating, and developing Tibetan opera, and promoting traditional Chinese culture.
Viewing the once-a-year Buddha Painting Display
The Buddha Exhibition in Drepung Monastery will be held from 8:00 to 14:00 on August 16, and in Sera Monastery from 9:00 to 15:00 on the same day.
Grand Horse Racing Events
The Lhasa Horse Racing Conference will take place at the Beijiao Racecourse on August 17 from 10:00 to 17:00 and on August 18 from 10:00 to 12:30. This year, the Lhasa Sports Bureau has upgraded the traditional equestrian performance to a horse racing conference. Alongside the national traditional equestrian performances, there will be two major events: speed horse racing and walking horse. The speed horse racing will include unlimited groups for the 3,000-meter and 8,000-meter races. The walking horse race will cover a distance of 5,000 meters.
Additionally, there will be a local group for horses under 1.4 meters in height, which will participate in the 2,000-meter, 3,000-meter, 5,000-meter, and 8,000-meter speed races. The performance and competitive equestrian event aims to provide a platform for equestrian enthusiasts in the region to communicate and display their skills while enriching the cultural and sports life of the people during the festival.
The Lhasa Tibetan Chess Exhibition Tournament
The Tibetan chess exhibition competition will take place at the Municipal Cultural and Sports Center on August 17, from 10:30 to 13:00. By inviting 50-100 participants, we aim to promote and popularize Tibetan chess cultural knowledge, showcase its unique charm, and meet the public’s desire to learn and cultivate a group of traditional Tibetan chess enthusiasts.
Investment promotion
The 2023 Lhasa Shoton Festival Investment Promotion Conference and Project Signing Event will take place on August 17, 2023, at the Tibet Hall of the Intercontinental Hotel in Paradise. The main activities include First, the centralized signing ceremony for investment projects; second, the promotion meeting for the investment projects of the 2023 Lhasa Shoton Festival, which will focus on promoting the investment environment of Lhasa, listing policies, and key projects in the park.
In addition to the above programs, during the Shoton Festival, the city will also hold a seminar in Lhasa on “Strive to be the vanguard of creating a national ecological civilization highland • Ecological restoration and comprehensive management of the Lhasa River Basin”, creating a cultural performance of the traditional Shoton Festival , traditional project performances, investment negotiations, and forum speeches in one, the “Shoton Feast” fully demonstrates the spirit of the people of all ethnic groups in the city who are grateful and forging ahead, united, and strives to be the first, and fully demonstrates Lhasa’s role in promoting long-term stability and high-quality development. The new achievements made during the journey have continuously enhanced the popularity and reputation of “Lhasa Shelton”, and promoted the long-term stability and high-quality development of Lhasa.
