The Potala Palace Administration has officially released an important announcement regarding visiting arrangements during the 2026 Chinese New Year and Tibetan New Year holiday period. As one of Tibet’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Potala Palace attracts thousands of visitors each year, especially during major festivals. Important Visitor Guidelines

To ensure safety and maintain order during the busy holiday period, visitors are advised to follow these guidelines:

Follow Designated Walking Routes

Temporary pedestrian railings will be installed along the visiting path on February 18. Travelers should queue patiently and walk through the designated corridors in an orderly manner. Avoid crowding to ensure a safe and pleasant visit.

Local Visitor Access During the Holiday

During the Spring Festival and Tibetan New Year break, local residents may enter the Potala Palace without advance reservations by presenting valid identification or an official introduction letter.

Why This Notice Matters for Tibet Travelers

The Chinese New Year and Tibetan New Year period is one of the most fascinating times to visit Lhasa. The city comes alive with traditional rituals, prayer ceremonies, colorful decorations, and festive energy.

However, it is also one of the busiest travel seasons. Understanding the Potala Palace holiday schedule, entry rules, and crowd-control measures can help you plan a smoother journey and make the most of your Tibet experience.

For travelers designing a Lhasa itinerary, aligning your visit with the confirmed opening dates can significantly enhance your trip while avoiding unnecessary schedule changes.
