Introduction to Peiku Lake
Peiku Lake, also known as “Bogu Lake,” “Lamo Tso,” and “Lhatso Shintso,” is nestled in Gyirong County, Shigatse, Tibet. At an altitude of 4,590 meters and spanning 300 square kilometers, it’s the largest lake in the Shigatse region. One of the most fascinating features of Peiku Lake is its two distinct sides: one with freshwater and the other with saltwater, separated by a fault line. This rare phenomenon adds to the lake’s mystique and allure.
The Majestic Surroundings of Peiku Lake: Shishapangma Peak
The lake’s waters are fed by the Shishapangma Peak and Peiku Gangri Mountain. Capturing a photo of Shishapangma Peak from Peiku Lake is believed to bring good fortune. Six well-preserved terraces flank the lake, created by its receding shoreline, and they form an open, gentle landscape that cradles the majestic Shishapangma Peak.
A Haven for Wildlife and Nature
Mountains and snow-capped peaks encircle Peiku Lake, whose clear, deep blue waters reflect the stunning scenery. Wildlife, including Tibetan wild donkeys, Tibetan gazelles, black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, and red-billed gulls, abounds along the lake’s shores. In autumn, the shores come alive with birds, adding to the lake’s charm.
Myth and Legend of Peiku Lake
According to Legend the Peiku Lake have connection with Yamdrok Lake in Nagartse. A Tibetan monk once threw a wooden bowl into Peiku Lake, only to find it later at Yamdrok Lake, signifying a mysterious connection between the two.
The Song of Peiku Lake
Tibetan singer Tsewang Dorje’s song “Beautiful Peiku Lake” captures the lake’s essence beautifully: the long rivers of Tibet, the enchanting blue autumn waves of Peiku Lake, and the ancient stories sculpted on its shores.
Exploring the Lake
Visitors can rent a Toyota vehicle from Lhasa and travel through Shigatse, Latse, Saga, and Gyirong to reach the lake. Just 20 kilometers southeast of Peiku Lake lies another small lake, “Namgyal Tso,” at an altitude of 4,650 meters.
