Exploring Pema Choeling Monastery: A Spiritual Oasis in Sakya County

Discover the ancient and revered Pema Choeling Monastery nestled at the southern base of Mount Suri, just 15 kilometers southeast of Sakya County. This sacred site, perched at an altitude of 4090 meters, boasts a rich history dating back to the 7th century.

Originally known as “Naima zurkang,” the monastery witnessed significant expansion in the 8th century, when the legendary Padmasambhava engaged in profound spiritual practices here. Later, in the 19th century, the monastery underwent a transformative expansion led by Lama Jamyang, leaving an indelible mark on its architectural and spiritual landscape.

Reconstruction and Renewal of Pema Choeling

Despite facing destruction during the Cultural Revolution, the Pema Choeling Monastery has risen from the ashes. Since 1983, extensive reconstruction efforts have breathed new life into this sacred space, featuring a two-story main hall, front porch, scripture hall, Buddha hall, guardian deity hall, and monks’ quarters.

Architectural Marvels

Front Porch: Guardian Deities in Vivid Detail

Marvel at the front porch, adorned with vivid paintings of the Four Heavenly Kings, offering a visual feast and setting the tone for the spiritual journey within. Step into the scripture hall, a luminous sanctuary supported by two grand columns. Behold the central skylight illuminating statues of Shakyamuni Buddha and Manjushri Bodhisattva, surrounded by captivating murals depicting the Three Jewels and the Sixteen Arhats.

Buddha Hall: Tranquil Serenity

Enter the Buddha hall, a tranquil haven featuring a 2-meter-tall clay statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. The scripture shelves house the revered “Kangyur” and “Tengyur” Buddhist scriptures, creating an atmosphere of serene spirituality.

Guardian Deity Hall: Divine Protection

Explore the guardian deity hall, where statues of the six-armed Mahakala and the wrathful goddess Shri Devi stand as symbols of divine protection.

Precious Artifacts

Unearth treasures within the monastery, such as a palm-leaf manuscript of the “Kangyur,” a literary gem with Sanskrit text and intricate illustrations of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. Another highlight is the wooden board painting depicting the Four-Armed Avalokiteśvara in a mandala, a testament to the rich cultural and historical significance of Pema Choeling.

Pema Choeling Monastery stands not only as a testament to resilience but as a spiritual haven inviting all to explore its history, art, and the profound teachings it safeguards. Immerse yourself in the serenity of this sacred space, where history and spirituality converge.
