Overview of Seqiong Temple
Historical Significance and Location: Seqiong Temple, known as se-chung-dgon in Tibetan, is situated in Duosong Village, Ridang Township, Longzi County, at an altitude of 3970 meters. This temple holds a special place in the history of Tibetan Buddhism, having been established in the “pre-promotion period” of the religion. Initially a Nyingma sect temple, it transitioned to the Kagyu sect in the 11th century and later adopted the Gelug sect after the 15th century.
Architectural Heritage
The Evolution of Structures: Although the original building of Seqiong Temple no longer exists, the current structure, which was rebuilt on the foundation of the original Dukang Hall, embodies the temple’s enduring legacy. Covering an area of about 200 square meters, this building is a testament to the temple’s historical resilience and spiritual significance.
Artistic Treasures of Seqiong Temple
Exquisite Sutra Boards: A remarkable feature of Seqiong Temple is its collection of sutra boards, known for their exquisite carvings. These boards, numbering around 60, are each 100 cm in length, 50 cm in thickness, and 5 cm in width. The carvings at both ends of the boards are particularly notable for their artistic craftsmanship:
- Design Elements: The boards are adorned with motifs such as lions, wheel treasures, curly lotus branches, and Buddha statues, each symbolizing various aspects of Buddhist teachings and iconography.
- Carving Techniques: The artistry on the sutra boards employs ground-reduced bas-relief and semi-circular carving techniques. These methods result in accurate, smooth lines and plump, vivid shapes, showcasing the skill and spiritual devotion of the craftsmen.
