Serenity at 4300 Meters Above Sea Level: Gyirong Gam Tsurpu Monastery
Perched beneath the scenic cliffs in the northwest of Zelong Village, Gyirong County, lies the Gyirong Gam Tsurpu Monastery, a serene sanctuary at an impressive altitude of 4300 meters. The monastery, known as “sgam-mtshur-phur” in the local language, translates to “the cave of beginnings” or “the cave of initial practice.” It is celebrated as the first meditation site of Milarepa (mi-la-ras-pa), the revered founder of the Kagyu lineage.
Historical Significance Since the 12th Century
Dating back to the 12th century, Gyirong Gam Tsurpu Monastery is an architectural masterpiece, harmoniously blending with the natural cliffside. The complex spans 260 square meters, comprising a Buddhist hall, deity hall, kitchen, and the renowned meditation cave. The meditation cave, modest in size at about 1 meter high and 3-4 square meters in area, offers an intimate space for spiritual contemplation.
The Kitchen and Deity Hall
The monastery’s kitchen, oriented south, features a 1-meter wide entrance and encompasses 16 square meters. The deity hall, with its distinct “concave” shape, is spread over 20 square meters, hosting an array of sacred Buddha statues.
The Buddhist Hall’s Artistic Grandeur
Facing east, the Buddhist hall displays exquisite murals. Its eastern wall portrays Milarepa, Marpa, the Goddess of Good Fortune, and seated figures of Kagyu masters and living Buddhas. The southern wall is adorned with Milarepa’s protective deity, “Tsering Jangyan,” alongside other guardian deities. The western wall is dedicated to the primary deity, Sakyamuni Buddha, with Tara figures on either side. The northern wall features Sakyamuni Buddha, his two disciples, sixteen Arhats, and the Four Heavenly Kings. These murals, once lost during the Cultural Revolution, have been beautifully restored in recent years.
