Nestled in the southeastern part of Bayi District in Nyingchi, Tibet, along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, Lulang Forest sits at an elevation of 3700 meters. Lulang, meaning “Dragon King Valley” in Tibetan, is famously dubbed the place “that makes you forget your home,” offering a breathtaking stretch of alpine meadow that spans about 15 km long and 1 km wide, known as the “heartland of Shambhala.”
A Meadow of Dreams
Surrounded by gently rising green mountains adorned with bushes, dense spruce, and pine trees, the central meadow unfolds with neat elegance. Streams meander through, wildflowers bloom in abundance, and traditional wooden fences, houses, and farm villages dot the landscape, creating a scene of peaceful rural life amidst the misty mountains.
In summer, the breeze carries the scent of ripening barley and wheat across the rolling hills, painting a mesmerizing view. Autumn and winter dress the mountain slopes in vibrant hues, transitioning from green to yellow and then to red, sketching a serene and picturesque “Mountain Dwelling” scene.
A Seasonal Palette of Nature’s Best
From mid-April to early June, Lulang’s rhododendrons, along with asters, primroses, and Pedicularis flowers, burst into a spectacle of colour. July transforms the area into a mosaic of colours over the 200,000 square meter alpine meadow, where hundreds of flower species bloom in a dazzling array of reds, purples, and yellows, turning the forest into an ocean of flowers that ripple with the contours of the land.
