Tashigang Monastery, a fascinating spiritual site, perches atop a small hill in Tashigang Township, just west of Ngari’s county seat and downstream of the Sengge Zangbo river. Founded by Lama Lhada Datsangwa, part of the Hemis Monastery system from Ladakh, it carries stories of faith that span centuries.
A Unique Spiritual Heritage
Legend tells us that on his pilgrimage to Lhasa, Lama Datsangwa recited prayers on this hill, and upon saying “May we build a temple of great power,” he hid a bowl of sacred water (Ghanta) praying for its preservation to signify the divine approval for the temple construction. Returning from Lhasa, finding the sacred water undiminished and even visible above ground confirmed his divine mission. After 7 years and with the help of craftsmen and artists, Tashigang Monastery was erected, welcoming 13 monks from Qiami Monastery.
Switching allegiances in the 15th century to the Gelugpa sect, this temple not only boasts an early establishment in Western Tibet but also became a significant spiritual site managed by Sera Monastery in Lhasa after the 17th century.
Architectural Marvel
The monastery’s defensive architecture includes a moat and a rammed earth wall, featuring protruding watchtowers and loopholes, embodying its rich military past. The temple complex, symbolizing the Buddhist Mount Meru, is surrounded by a circumambulatory path, reflecting classic Tibetan architectural styles.
Within its walls, the temple houses precious Buddha statues, over two hundred stupas, and a thousand Thangkas, making it a treasure trove of Tibetan Buddhist art and spirituality. Presently, the monastery is home to four monks and two administrators, maintaining its legacy.

Tashigang Monastery vibrantly celebrates several traditional festivals and religious activities. These include the 18-day prayer festival in the first Tibetan month, the Medicine Buddha Festival, and unique ceremonies throughout the year, culminating in the grand display of Cham dance during the Ganden Ngamcho festival, drawing followers from across the region for a splendid cultural and spiritual spectacle.
