Exploring Bagha Sacred Mountain: A Pilgrimage Site in Gongbo’gyamda

Journey to Bagha Sacred Mountain

Bagha Sacred Mountain, standing tall at over 5,000 meters in Nyangpu Township, Gongbo’gyamda County, is more than just a natural wonder; it’s a spiritual beacon for countless devotees. Resembling the goddess Dorje Phagmo, the mountain is famed for the “Dorje Phagmo Navel Cave” halfway up its slopes. This revered “Divine Cave” attracts thousands of pilgrims who come to worship its spiritual essence, believing it to be the navel of the goddess herself.

Spiritual Landmarks and Mystical Waters

At the cave’s entrance, two stone mounds covered with cattle and sheep skulls bearing the “Om Mani Padme Hum” mantra wave prayer flags in the wind, creating an aura of sanctity. A visible footprint on the cave’s stone wall is said to belong to Padmasambhava, used to subdue a giant scorpion. Inside, a hanging iron chain and a “skylight” in the cave’s ceiling illuminate the interior, revealing circular walls adorned with sacred beasts, Buddha images, and indecipherable scripts.

The cave features a unique structure with a large cave enclosing a smaller one, which in turn houses another cavern. Below the “Dorje Phagmo’s Mouth,” two remarkable springs lie. One, named “Dorje Phagmo’s Urinating Spring,” intrigues with its continuous flow from a linear water hole surrounded by thick moss, resembling female anatomy. The water, slightly warm and smooth to the touch, contributes to the site’s mystique.

Another spring, the “Intermittent Fountain,” lies 30 meters below, gushing water several meters into the air six times a day, all year round, with remarkable precision every four hours. This fountain, also known as “Bagha Sacred Spring,” is accompanied by the mythical appearance of an eagle before each eruption, adding to the site’s legendary status.

More than a Mountain: A Tapestry of Legends

Bagha Mountain is rich in divine stories. Forty kilometers away, three lakes of different sizes shimmer in blue, green, and white, known as the “Sister Lakes,” where mirages of “phantom cities” are said to appear.

Cultural Significance and Exploration Tips

Dorje Phagmo (Vajravarahi) is a central deity in Tibetan Buddhism, representing wisdom and enlightenment.
