An Overview of Gang Township Nature Reserve
Nestled within Bomi County of Nyingchi, the Gang Township Nature Reserve spans a vast area of 288 square kilometers, with forests covering 28 square kilometers, resulting in a forest coverage rate of 61%. The reserve boasts a timber volume of 2.52 million cubic meters, making the Bomi spruce forests among the densest in the world in terms of timber volume per unit area, with some areas reaching a wood volume of 2300 cubic meters per hectare. The biomass per hectare reaches up to 1200 tons, triple the production of northern Taiga forests, marking it as the highest-yielding dark coniferous forest globally.
Unique Features of the Reserve
- Spectacular Peak Forests: The reserve’s landscape, believed to have originated from an ancient sea transformed by millions of years of geological activity, erosion, and sculpting, features uniquely shaped peaks. Each mountain peak tells a story, ranging from celestial beings to gentle maidens, hidden warriors to playful spirits in the clouds, creating a mystical and varied landscape.
- Lush, Verdant Forests: Entering the reserve, visitors are greeted by dense canopies that obscure the sky, ancient trees of rare species such as fir, spruce, hemlock, red pine, high-mountain pine, and camphor. These millennia-old trees, some reaching heights of 20-30 meters and circumferences that require multiple people to embrace, stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time.
- Rich Fauna and Flora: The reserve is home to robust and agile wildlife, including the Sambar deer, red goral, argali sheep, wild buffalo, and wild donkeys, with occasional sightings of black bears and leopards. The spring season ushers in a plethora of precious medicinal herbs like gastrodia elata, poria, notoginseng, codonopsis, and lingzhi mushrooms, alongside valuable animal-derived materials like bear bile and musk.
- The Picturesque Gang Village Lake: Also known as “Grass Lake,” Gang Village Lake forms a serene, mirror-like body of water surrounded by dense forests and lush grasslands. It serves as a haven for wild horses, yaks, and donkeys, and an ideal grazing ground. The lake’s clear, blue waters reflect the sky, trees, and mountains, creating a breathtaking natural painting populated by small fish and frequented by waterfowl, making it an enchanting spot in the spring.

- “China’s Most Beautiful Spruce Forest”: Rated by experts from “China National Geographic” as the most beautiful spruce forest in China, the journey from Bomi County to Gang Township Nature Reserve is about 22 kilometers, accessible only by hired car or self-drive. The route offers stunning views, perfect for photography enthusiasts.
- Sustainable Tourism Initiatives: The establishment of the “Bomi Gangba Rural Tourism Cooperative” marks Linzhi’s first such endeavor, offering horse rentals, unique dining and lodging experiences, the sale of souvenirs, and performances of traditional music and dance.
- Conservation Awareness: Visitors are urged to be mindful of fire prevention, refraining from using lighters, matches, or smoking within the reserve to protect this invaluable natural heritage.
