Gu Township Lake: A Serene Freshwater Gem in Bomi County, Nyingchi

Introduction to Gu Township Lake

Gu Township Lake, nestled in the ancient Gu Village west of Bomi County’s town in Nyingchi, Tibet, sits at an elevation of 2600 meters. The lake stretches 5 kilometers in length and varies between 1 to 2 kilometers in width, with its deepest point reaching 20 meters. It was formed in 1953 when a massive mudslide, triggered by the eruption of the “Xiong Lu Gei Ni” glacier in the mountains behind Gu Township, blocked the flow of the Parlung Tsangpo River, creating this renowned freshwater lake in eastern Tibet.

The Lake and Its Natural Beauty

Within the lake lies a small island covering about 1000 square meters, adding to the scenic beauty of the expansive, ripple-touched waters. The lake is home to a variety of precious fish species, including the Schizothorax, Gymnocypris, and the local “Zhamu Fish,” among more than ten other esteemed varieties.

The lush evergreen pine and spruce forests along the north and south shores, the towering snow-capped peaks, the vibrant wildflowers and fruits, and the picturesque villages reflecting on the water’s surface create a captivating landscape. Herds of cattle and sheep grazing by the lakeside paint a picture-perfect scene reminiscent of a hidden paradise, offering a “wandering through a painting” experience to visitors.
