How to travel into Tibet from Russia

Flight information from Russia to Tibet through China

The most common way to travel to Tibet from Russia is to fly to one of the major cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, or Chengdu, and then take a connecting flight to Lhasa, Tibet’s capital city. – Major airlines, such as Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and Sichuan Airlines, operate flights from Russia to China. The most common departure cities in Russia are Moscow and St. Petersburg. – It is important to note that foreign travellers need a Chinese visa to enter China, and a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet. The latter can only be obtained through a travel agency in China or Tibet.

Flight information from Russia to Tibet through Nepal

Another option to travel to Tibet is to fly to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, and then take a flight or overland transfer to Tibet. – Nepal Airlines and Air China operate direct flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Alternatively, travellers can take a bus or hire a private car to drive to the Tibetan border and then enter Tibet by land.

Similar to the China option, travellers need to obtain a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet, as well as a Nepalese visa to enter Nepal. It is recommended to arrange all necessary permits and visas before departure. It is important to check with local embassies and travel agencies for up-to-date information and guidance before planning any trip.

If you choose to travel from Russia to Tibet through Beijing

There are few direct flights from Russia to Beijing. Some of the airlines that operate direct flights include Aeroflot, China Southern Airlines, and Hainan Airlines. The flight duration is typically around 7-8 hours. It is recommended to check with the respective airline for the most up-to-date schedule and pricing information.

Trains depart from Beijing to the capital of the Tibetan plateau every day, covering a distance of approximately 3,757 km. The train journey takes about 41-42 hours to cross China, passing through six provinces. The train departs from Beijing in the evening and arrives in Lhasa in the afternoon on the third day.

If you choose to travel from Russia to Tibet through Chengdu or Shanghai

 There are no direct flights from Russia to Chengdu. However, several airlines offer connecting flights with layovers in other Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. There are direct flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Guangzhou. Airlines such as Aeroflot, China Southern Airlines, and S7 Airlines offer direct flights between the cities.

Air China’s flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa depart around 12:10 pm every day and arrive in Lhasa at 4:00 pm local time. Sichuan Airlines has flights departing from Nepal at 11:30 in the morning.
