Taizhao Ancient City: A Historic Crossroad on the Tibetan Plateau

Exploring Taizhao Ancient City

Taizhao Ancient City, originally known as “Jiangda,” once stood as one of the “Four Domains of Gongbo.” It is located in Taizhao Village, Jiangda Township, Gongbo’gyamda County, along the south side of National Highway 318. Historically, there were four main routes into Tibet, with three passing through Taizhao Village, earning it the title “Ancient Tang-Tibet Highway Station.”

A Glimpse into the Past

By the Tang Dynasty, Taizhao was already one of Tibet’s significant towns. Legend has it that Princess Wencheng stayed here en route to Tibet. The Yuan Dynasty established a post station here, and during the Qing Dynasty, Empress Dowager Cixi dispatched Zhao Erfeng to Tibet, leading to the area being named “Taizhao.” By the late Qing Dynasty, the area became a bustling economic, cultural, and transport hub known as “Jiangda,” featuring a vibrant market, government offices, schools, post offices, inns, and more. The diverse community and thriving trade made Taizhao a key commercial and cultural center at the time.
