Exploring Qilinxia Grand Canyon: A Hidden Gem in Tibet

Qilinxia Grand Canyon is situated in Dingjie County, Shigatse City, Tibet, on the northern slopes of the Himalayas, close to the southeast border of the Fixed Knot Wetlands. To access Qilinxia Grand Canyon from the city centre of Shigatse, follow G318 and head towards Gangba County before switching to Line 219. The total distance of the trip is approximately 200 kilometers and the estimated time of arrival is around 3.5 hours. The path showcases picturesque scenery with a low population density and abundant flocks of livestock.

Arriving at Mu Village, the entrance to Qilin Gorge, which belongs to the Mount Everest Reserve, is just 260 kilometres away from the Everest base camp. While many people rush to check in at the base camp, few know the hidden gem of Qilin Gorge. However, after car enthusiasts shared their experiences on Weibo, it quickly gained attention and became a sensation.

Geographical History of Qilinxia

The Qixia Forest is a prehistoric crack in the ground, stretching from the northern foothills of the Himalayas to the Dingjie wetlands. Its formation testifies to the influence of time and water. A river, sourced from the melting snow of the Himalayas, flows through the canyon during July and August.

Over many years of erosion, the river has formed “unloading cracks” on the slope. The water from the river continues to erode along these cracks, creating the Grand Canyon and the varied forest within it. Qilin Gorge is a remarkable canyon that stretches around 15 kilometres from north to south. It has a width ranging from 100 to 200 meters and a depth of 200 meters. When seen from above, this canyon extends from the northern foothills of the Himalayas, gradually blending into the Dingjie wetland grassland.

Tips for travelling Qilinxia Earthen Forest

  1. Due to Dingjie County being a border county, a border defence certificate is required to enter Qilin Gorge Scenic Area.
  2. As part of environmental protection measures, self-driving cars are prohibited from entering the core scenic spots. Visitors must switch to the scenic area bus.
  3. The scenic area is open from Monday to Sunday, between 8:00 and 19:00.
