Kunchok Linka: Shigatse’s Most Hidden Gem Amidst Nature and History

Kunchok Linka: A Blend of Tibetan Heritage and Natural Splendor

Explore Kunchok Linka (dkon-mchog-gling-ka), also known as “Sharchok Linka,” a serene retreat located about 2 kilometres northeast of Shigatse city. Nestled beside the Yarlung Tsangpo River and near the Nyanchu River, this oasis of peace was established by the 7th Panchen Lama, Tenphel Nima, in 1825. Covering approximately 500,000 square meters, it initially bore the name “Dekyi Lake” and was later renamed Kunchok Linka, signifying a grove for the liberation of all beings.

A Spiritual Center and Recreational Haven

Historically, Kunchok Linka served as the vibrant site for the annual Cham (Masked Dance) festivities and the summer palace for the 7th Panchen Lama. The famous Simoqenbo Festival, initiated in 1846, was held here until relocated to Dechen Phodrang post a flood in 1954. It stands as a testament to the region’s deep-rooted religious practices and serves as a recreational paradise for locals and tourists alike.

The Enchanting Spiraled Willows of Kunchok Linka

The park is famous for its assortment of ancient trees, especially its unique spiralled willows that grow in a clockwise direction, adding a whimsical touch to its landscape. These trees, with their varied and twisting shapes, enhance the natural beauty of Kunchok Linka.

Kunchok Linka’s Modern Transformation

In recent years, with Shigatse’s advancement, Kunchok Linka has emerged as a favourite summer destination and leisure spot. Revitalized in 2003 as a part of a Shanghai-led renovation project, it beautifully preserves its original charm while serving modern needs. The Lhakang Festival celebrated annually on June 1st, adds cultural vibrancy with various garden activities.

Key Attractions and Facilities

Visitors can explore historical sites like the Dekyi Lake, Wangchuk Chenmo Shrine, and the Sacrificial Mother Well. The park also offers amenities for swimming, bathing, and fitness activities. Together with Drashu Linka, Wolga Linka, and Southern Qinsang Garden, Kunchok Linka is part of an attractive riverside tourism area, drawing both local and international guests.

Tips for Visiting Kunchok Linka

  • 1. Ticket Information: Entry is 30 RMB per person.
  • 2. Getting There: Easily accessible, the park is a 20-minute walk or a short rickshaw ride from the city centre, south of Tashilhunpo Monastery.

Immerse yourself in the tranquil and culturally rich environment of Kunchok Linka, where the beauty of Shigatse’s natural landscape meets a rich tapestry of Tibetan history and spirituality.
