Lhamo Latso – The Mystical “Soul Lake of the Goddess”
Perched over 5000 meters above sea level in the northeastern part of Gyaca County, Lhamo Latso, meaning “The Soul Lake of the Heavenly Mother” in Tibetan. It stands as one of the most revered holy lakes in Tibetan Buddhism. Known alternatively as Lhamo Namtso and “Chokhor Gyel Divine Lake,” its elliptical shape, nestled among towering peaks, offers a stunningly picturesque view. Frozen for nearly seven months a year, the lake transforms in summer, alternating between tranquil clarity and mysteriously rippling waters under clouded skies.

Though modest in size, Lhamo Latso holds a unique and significant place in Tibetan Buddhism’s reincarnation system, revered by devotees for its prophetic power. Believed to be the abode of the propitious Tara Goddess. It is said to possess the divine ability to reveal the ‘Three Times’ (past, present, and future) in its reflections. The lake is crucial in the search for reincarnated souls (Tulkus) like the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, offering clues about the rebirth details of these spiritual leaders.

Visiting Lhamo Latso: Tips and Insights
- Entry Fee: Previously, a ticket of 50 RMB, available at the entrance.
- Transportation: Accessible via bus from Lhasa to Gyaca County, followed by a short drive. A 50 km drive from Gyaca County to Chokhor Gyal Monastery, and an additional 15 km to the sacred lake. A shared off-road vehicle from the county can cost around 600 RMB, taking about an hour to reach the lake’s base.
- Trekking Route: A scenic 300 km trek through the counties of Sangri, Gyaca, and Chusum, often completed in 5 days. This journey combines breathtaking natural scenery with rich cultural experiences, best undertaken between May and August. Hiring a guide is recommended for ease of communication.
- En Route: The Baxiang forest at the base of Barlong Valley (3100 meters) offers a pristine forest with ancient trees and a variety of edible mushrooms and rare medicinal plants. Wildlife sightings, including bears, are common.
