Tour Tibet in January and February: What to Expect

You can visit Everest Base Camp (EBC) on the Tibetan side during January and February. The North Base Camp remains open year-round for travelers who arrange their trip through a licensed tour operator. Independent travel in Tibet is not permitted, and all foreign visitors must join organized tours with proper permits.

Winter travel to Tibet offers a unique experience. You can expect fewer tourists, lower prices, and clear views of Mount Everest. At the same time, extreme cold, strong winds, and limited services make this a rewarding but challenging journey.

As of 2026, there are no blanket closures at Everest Base Camp. The area fully reopened after the January 2025 earthquake in Dingri County. However, occasional road disruptions due to weather are still possible. Always confirm with your tour operator before departure.

Can You Visit Everest Base Camp in Winter?

The Tibetan side of Everest Base Camp, located at 5,200 meters, is accessible in winter. Tours usually begin in Lhasa and travel overland rather than trekking. This makes winter visits more practical despite the cold.

Winter advantages include:

  • 20–30% lower costs compared to peak season
  • Fewer crowds at major viewpoints
  • Clear, crisp views of Everest’s north face
  • A peaceful and authentic travel atmosphere

Winter is ideal for travelers who prefer solitude and dramatic landscapes.

Winter Weather in Tibet (January & February)

Tibet’s winter climate is dry and sunny. Skies are often clearer than in summer, offering excellent visibility for photography.

Average Weather Conditions

MonthDaytime HighNighttime LowClear DaysPrecipitation
January4°C-17°C29 days6 mm
February4°C-15°C28 daysMinimal

Daytime temperatures may feel slightly warmer under strong sunshine, especially at lower elevations. However, nights are extremely cold.

Strong winds can intensify the chill factor. Snow is possible, but major roads are generally maintained.

Winter transforms the plateau into a snow-dusted landscape. Photography is especially impressive at:

  • Gawula Pass
  • Rongbuk Monastery

Road Conditions and Transportation

The overland journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp covers approximately 600–700 km. The route passes through Shigatse and Shegar and typically takes 2–3 days each way with sightseeing stops.

What to Expect

  • Paved highways for most of the journey
  • Winding mountain roads
  • Possible icy sections
  • 4WD vehicles with experienced drivers

Heavy snow may cause temporary closures, but these are rare.

Private vehicles are not allowed for the final stretch to EBC. Eco-buses operate the last section from the checkpoint area.

Accommodation in Winter

From late October to April, the tent hotels at EBC close. During winter, the main accommodation option near base camp is:

Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse

  • Basic heated rooms
  • Oxygen available
  • Some rooms with Everest views

Alternative lodging is available in Zhaxizong Village at slightly lower altitude.

Hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse remain open, though options may be fewer than in peak season.

Permits Required for Winter EBC Tours

To visit Everest Base Camp in winter, travelers need:

  • Chinese visa
  • Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
  • Alien’s Travel Permit (for EBC region)

Your tour operator handles all permits, typically 15–21 days in advance. During holidays such as Chinese New Year (late January or early February), processing times may be slower.

All foreign travelers must join guided group tours.

Winter Tour Costs (2026)

For a 7–8 day small-group tour from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp:

  • Estimated cost: 4,000–6,000 RMB
  • Approx. $550–$850 USD per person

This usually includes:

  • Transportation
  • Guide services
  • Permits
  • Accommodation
  • Meals as listed

Winter tours are generally 20–30% cheaper than peak-season prices.

Health and Altitude Considerations

Everest Base Camp sits at 5,200 meters. High altitude combined with winter cold increases physical stress.

Preparation Tips

  • Spend 3–4 days acclimatizing in Lhasa
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Carry altitude medication such as Diamox (consult a doctor first)
  • Use oxygen cans or tanks if necessary

Symptoms such as headaches or nausea should not be ignored. Rest and proper pacing are essential.

What to Pack for a Winter Tibet Tour

Proper gear is critical for January and February travel.

Clothing Essentials

  • Thermal base layers
  • Down jacket
  • Windproof pants
  • Insulated boots
  • Warm gloves and hat
  • Sunglasses (strong UV at high altitude)

Other Essentials

  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Moisturizer
  • Sleeping bag liner (optional)

Although bedding is provided at guesthouses, extra warmth may increase comfort.

Suggested Itinerary Adjustments

Winter travel requires flexibility. Consider:

  • Extending stays for additional rest
  • Including cultural visits such as Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse
  • Allowing extra time for road conditions

For photographers, sunrise and sunset at Rongbuk offer golden-hour views of Everest’s north face. A UV filter is recommended for strong high-altitude sunlight.

Travel Tips for a Better Experience

  • Respect monastery rules (no photos inside without permission)
  • Pack out all trash
  • Support local restaurants and small businesses
  • Dress modestly when visiting religious sites

Winter tours offer peaceful sunsets, starry nights, and snow-covered peaks. The quiet atmosphere creates a different side of Tibet that many travelers never see.

2026 Travel Notes

Tibet tourism continues to stabilize after the 2025 Dingri earthquake recovery. Access to Everest Base Camp remains open, though advance booking is recommended—ideally 1–2 months ahead for preferred dates.

Some operators offer winter promotions or upgraded heated rooms for added comfort.
