This excursion is suitable for most individuals, but it’s highly recommended for young people, couples, and students. It’s ideal for those with limited travel time but a strong desire to reach the “Top of the World.” However, it’s essential to note that the tour itinerary is fast-paced, allowing you to visit multiple attractions in a short time. You’ll have only 2-3 days to acclimate to the high altitude before heading to Mt. Everest. Thus, a good level of physical fitness is necessary, and some previous experience with high-altitude travel is recommended.
Anticipate ascending and descending approximately 1,000 meters per day. Activities at Mt. Everest base camp are situated at an elevation of around 5200m above sea level. Many clients add an extra day for a outskirts tour of Lhasa or stay an additional night in Gyantse to allow sufficient time for acclimatization to the high altitude.
Best Time to Visit Mt. Everest
The optimal time to visit Mt. Everest is between April, May, and June, as you are more likely to have the best view of the majestic peak. It’s advisable to avoid visiting in July and August, as these months are both the peak season and the rainy season, which could lead to road closures. Also, be aware that the journey to Mt. Everest may be too cold and challenging from October to March.
Everest Base Camp Itinerary
Day 1: Lhasa Arrival
Your epic journey begins in Lhasa. You’ll be greeted at the airport and transported to your hotel in a private vehicle. As you travel, savour the stunning scenery along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, where you’ll encounter Tibetan characteristics like Buddha carvings and prayer flags. After arriving at your hotel, take the rest of the day to explore and acclimatize to the high altitude.
Day 2: Lhasa Sightseeing
After breakfast, embark on your first day of exploration with a visit to Norbulingka Park, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama. Discover the stunning gardens and immerse yourself in the profound history of this sacred place. Your journey then takes you to Drepung Monastery, once the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery, accommodating up to 10,000 monks at its peak. Gain insight into the lives of Tibetan monks. The day concludes at Sera Monastery, known for its captivating “Buddhism Scriptures Debating.”
Day 3: Wondering Lhasa
Your journey continues with a visit to the iconic Potala Palace, constructed in 641 AD, representing Tibet’s heart and soul. Explore this remarkable structure with its Tibetan architecture, golden Buddha statues, and devoted worshippers. In the evening, experience the spiritual heart of Tibet at Jokhang Temple. Follow the circular pilgrimage path at Barkhor Street, as the local adherents do.
Day 4: Lhasa – Gyantse
Today, you’ll be driven from Lhasa to Gyantse. Along the way, make a stop to admire the beauty of Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s most renowned sacred lakes. For Tibetans, it is one of the four sacred lakes and is considered the abode of “fierce deities.” The turquoise-blue waters and surrounding snow-capped mountains create a breathtaking view. In Gyantse, explore Pelkor Monastery, adorned with exquisite frescoes, statues, and sculptures.
Day 5: Gyantse – Shigatse
After breakfast, a scenic 2.5-hour drive takes you to Shigatse. Here, you’ll visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the residence of the Panchen Lama and one of the largest operational monasteries in Tibet. Witness the grandeur of the Future Buddha, the largest of its kind on earth, adorned with precious pearls, turquoise, coral, and amber.
Day 6: Shigatse – Sakya Monastery – Tingri
Today’s journey leads to Tingri, with a stop at Sakya Monastery along the way. In the 13th century, Sakya Monastery rose to prominence as a centre of Buddhist learning, supported by the Mongolian military. Sakya Monastery, constructed in 1268, is a massive fortress-like complex with formidable defensive walls in its southern section.
Day 7: Tingri – Rongbuk Monastery
Drive to Rongbuk Monastery, located at the foot of Mount Everest. The journey offers stupendous views of the Himalayas on a clear day, featuring peaks over 8,000 meters, including Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, Gyachung, and Cho Oyu. Rongbuk Monastery, standing at 4,980 meters high, is the world’s highest monastery. Spend the night in a tent or guesthouse near Rongbuk Monastery.
Day 8: Everest Base Camp – Kyirong
Witness the breathtaking sunrise at the Everest Base Camp before embarking on a scenic drive to Kyirong. The road unveils the spectacular beauty of the snow-capped Himalayan Range, offering a majestic sight that will leave you in awe. Kyirong, near Nepal, blends Tibetan and Nepalese cultures, creating a unique tapestry of traditions, customs, and landscapes. Day 9: Kyirong – Border Crossing
After breakfast, drive to the Nepal-China border, where your overland journey to Kathmandu concludes. If desired, we can arrange pickup from the border to Kathmandu.
