Lhasa Tour

Lhasa
Everest

This demanding hike through the alpine landscape of the majestic Himalayas is an excellent choice for seasoned hikers and adventurers. To embark on this trek, you must be physically fit and properly acclimated before venturing into the lofty Kama Valley. Therefore, after a few days of acclimatization and rest in Lhasa, including a gentle visit to the mystical Potala Palace, some divine temples, and monasteries, we gradually make our way towards the towering peaks of the great Himalayas.

Eventually, the rugged path along the Bumchu River leads us to Kharta. The exciting yet challenging hike takes us through several high passes and stunning glacial lakes, then through the fertile Karma valley to Khangshung Everest Base Camp and the thriving Khangshung glacier in the Pethang Ringmo meadow. It provides breathtaking close-up views of Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse. Then, we loop across the alpine valleys and pass back to Kharta before descending to Lhasa.

Exploring the Pristine Beauty of Gamagou: A Hiking Odyssey on Mount Everest’s East Slope

Nestled on the east slope of Mount Everest, the Gamagou Hiking Route has been hailed as “the most beautiful valley in the world” and stands as one of China’s top hiking destinations. Offering unparalleled natural scenery, this route is a pristine wilderness where snowy mountains, lakes, and forests converge, creating an environment untouched by modernity.

Gamagou’s Mystique – Visual Feast at Every Step:

Karma Valley, shrouded in mystery, epitomizes primitive wildness. Accessible only by yak, this region exudes a sense of purity, remoteness, and tranquillity—an oasis of privacy in our interconnected world. Gamagou, with an average altitude exceeding 4000m, presents a visual feast of plateau snow mountains. Hiking on the east slope of Mount Everest, trekkers are surrounded by continuous snow-capped peaks and glaciers, including the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, the fourth-highest, Lhotse Peak, and the fifth-highest, Makalu.

Lakeside Wonders – Floral Paradise:

More than 40 lakes, locally known as “Tso,” adorn the landscape. From the reflective beauty of Cuoxuerenma, Xiaowucuo, Langmucuo, and Cuolangcuo to the tranquil seclusion of Xiaowucuo under Xiaowula Pass, each lake contributes to the unique spectacle between heaven and earth.

Ascending from the valley bottom to the forest at an altitude of over 4000 meters, Gamagou hosts a well-preserved virgin forest—a plant paradise with diverse species. Alpine rhododendrons, weeping cypresses, and Yunnan hemlocks create a vibrant tapestry in the bright sunshine.

Campsites Under the Stars: Embracing Everest’s East Slope

The journey offers five classic campsites, each with its unique charm. From Xiaowucuo Camp capturing the spectacular Makalu and Everest reflections to the magical Cuoxue Renma Camp resembling a realm in the sky, these campsites provide unparalleled views under the star-studded night sky.

Walking through Gamagou is more than a hike; it’s a spiritual journey. Rest by the lakes, witness sunrise and sunset and experience the sunshine illuminating the golden mountains. Nights under the stars become moments of introspection and connection with the universe.

Day 1 Lhasa Arrival

Today marks the arrival of all group members in Lhasa from various parts of the country. Whether by flight or train, participants can choose the mode of transport that suits them best. This day serves as a relaxed gathering day with no specific time constraints. Upon arrival, it is advisable to rest at the hotel, allowing the body to acclimate to the high-altitude plateau environment. To prevent potential health issues, it is recommended not to take a shower or wash your hair on the day of arrival.

  • Meal: Lhasa welcome banquet
  • Accommodation: Four-star hotel in Lhasa

Day 2 Lhasa Cultural Exploration

Begin your day with a visit to Norbulingka Park, the erstwhile summer residence of the Dalai Lama. Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the gardens, delving into the sacred history that envelops this Tibetan treasure. Continue to Drepung Monastery, once a sanctuary for 10,000 monks, unveiling the stories and lifestyles of Tibetan monastic life.

Conclude your day at Sera Monastery, where the unique “Buddhism Scriptures Debating” unfolds. Witness the fervent debates, an iconic facet of Sera Monastery that has gained international acclaim.

Day 3 Enchanting Wonders of Lhasa

Embark on an awe-inspiring journey to the iconic Potala Palace, a symbol of Tibet’s grandeur. Erected in 641 AD, this winter abode of the Dalai Lama boasts breathtaking Tibetan architecture, colossal golden Buddha statues, and a palpable spiritual ambience.

In the afternoon, venture into the spiritual heart of Tibet with a visit to Jokhang Temple. A pilgrimage destination for Tibetans, the temple resonates with the echoes of devotion. Conclude your day by strolling along Barkhor Street, following the traditional circular pilgrimage route, where the vibrant pulse of Tibetan culture beats fervently.

Day 4 Lhasa to Shigatse

Begin the day’s journey from Lhasa in the morning, crossing the majestic Gangbala Snow Mountain at an altitude of 4,990 meters. Experience the breathtaking beauty of Yamdrok Yumtso, one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes, and proceed to Yamdrok Lake and Nagartse. After a satisfying lunch, continue the adventure to the stunning Karola Glacier, surrounded by continuous snow-capped mountains. Pass by Gyantse Zongshan Fort and finally reach Shigatse, a significant town in Tibet.

Note: The itinerary is subject to change based on local conditions and travel considerations.

Day 5 Shigatse to Qudang via Sakya County

After a hearty breakfast, our journey takes us to Qudang along National Highway 318. En route, we pass through the historic Sakya County, where we pause for a satisfying lunch. Our next stop is Dingjie, which offers a stunning viewpoint to behold Mount Everest. Weather permitting, you might catch a glimpse of the east slope of Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse. From Dingjie, we continue our expedition to today’s destination, the picturesque Diyopa Village.

  • Meals: Breakfast in Shigatse included; lunch and dinner not included
  • Accommodation: Yopa Village Inn (multiple rooms)

Day 6: Youpa Village to Xiaowucuo (4600 meters)

Embark on the first day of our hiking adventure from Youpa Village to Xiaowucuo. The trail presents three challenging climbing sections, particularly demanding as we ascend to this high altitude soon after reaching the plateau. For those still acclimatizing to the plateau, a gradual pace is advised initially during the adaptation period of the first three days. Afterwards, adjust the hiking speed according to personal physical strength. The journey takes approximately five hours to reach Xiaowucuo, situated to the left of the campground.

Across from the Xiaowucuo camp, the Xiaowula Pass, our route for tomorrow, comes into view. Although Xiaowucuo Camp offers an excellent vantage point for observing Makalu and Everest, the likelihood of favourable weather here is relatively low.

Day 7: Xiaowucuo to Zhuoxiang (4000m) via Xiaowula (4900m)

In pursuit of the best weather conditions around Mount Everest, our day begins before sunrise. After a nourishing breakfast, we conquer the Xiaowula Pass, which comprises two challenging climbing sections. The initial climb offers a panoramic view of Shangxiaowu Cuo, providing a remarkable perspective of the Xueruo River Valley adorned with diverse shrubs, meandering streams, and imposing rock formations. Descending from the mountain, we encounter a vast grassland, ideal for camping. However, to optimize our route for the following day, we press on, entering a pine forest until we reach our camp at Zhuoxiang.

Positioned at a crucial three-way intersection, Zhuoxiang serves as the gateway to the east slope of Mount Everest, the upper reaches of Garmagou to the north, and the pathway to Xiaowula by heading east along the stream. A wooden bridge beckons us to cross, guiding us southwest into Garmagou.

  • Meals: Breakfast at camp; lunch not included; dinner at camp included
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Today’s Hiking Duration: 6 to 9 hours

Day 8: Zhuoxiang (4000m) to Tangxiang Observation Deck (4200m) via Xianong Ranch (4200m)

Rise early to capture the breathtaking reflection of Makalu Snow Mountain in the Zhuoxiang River. Post breakfast, our ascent commences with a climb toward Cuolang Lake, accompanied by a lunch break. Continuing along the crosscut road, we reach Manidui on the ridge. Crossing this ridge brings us to Shanonxia Ranch, and further uphill to the challenging climb of Xianong Ranch. Upon reaching the summit, Tangxiang, our camp for the day, unfolds before us. Descending the mountain, we arrive at Tangxiang Observation Deck Camp.

  • Meals: Breakfast at camp; lunch not included; dinner at camp included
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Hiking Duration: 6-7 hours

Day 9: Tangxiang Observation Deck (4200 meters) to Oga

An early rise is essential today as Tangxiang Camp unveils its rare vista of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Everest, and Tola Gangboche. This viewing platform offers a unique opportunity to capture panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains. Breakfast concluded, and our descent from Tangxiang Platform led us to the river valley, traversing beyond Badang Camp. Passing a sizable landslide and navigating multiple crosscuts, we find ourselves amidst a vast grassland, marking our arrival at Oga, our campsite for the day.

  • Meals: Breakfast at camp; lunch not included; dinner at camp included
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Hiking Duration: 6-7 hours

Day 10: Oga to Everest East Slope Base Camp (5200 meters) and back to Oga

Oga Camp, nestled at a relatively lower altitude, prompts an early rise for those eager to capture photographs of Mount Everest and Lhotse. A trip to Baidang Camp offers an expansive pasture and, weather permitting, a spectacular view of the towering peaks of Mount Everest and Lhotse. As the Everest East Slope Base Camp lacks clear signs, approach as closely as possible to capture its essence. Return to Oga Camp in the evening.

  • Meals: Breakfast at camp; lunch not included; dinner at camp included
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Hiking Duration: 7-8 hours

Day 11: Oga (4690 meters) to Cuoxue Renma (4900 meters) via Badang, Tangxiang or Rega (4550 meters)

Descend to a platform, revealing the four remaining mountain lakes encircling Tsoxerenma. The descent continues, offering breathtaking views of the valley bottom. In the afternoon, traverse down the valley, culminating in an exciting arrival at Dingri. Witness the parked cars on the roadside, signalling the conclusion of the exhilarating trek. As dusk settles, relish a final gaze at the beautiful and majestic Himalayas from the Gawula Pass.

  • Meals: Camp breakfast; lunch and dinner not included
  • Accommodation: Tingri (Public standard)
  • Hiking Duration: 8 hours

Completed the Mount Everest Kharda trek with G adventures and had a great time. The altitude started to have an effect around 3700 metres, but after taking an altitude pill, it managed to complete the rest of the trek with little to no symptoms.

Would recommend the trip to anyone, but it is a tough trek, for sure, but worth it.

We stayed in tea houses along the way, which were all varying sorts of uncomfortable, especially sleeping at night.

Bring a good sleeping bag and lots of warm clothes.
