Everything You Need to Know About Checked and Carry Baggage

Can you provide a precise definition of checked baggage and carry-on?

Checked baggage refers to the luggage that is given to the airline for transportation and is collected at the final destination. Carry-on or hand luggage refers to the smaller bags and personal items that passengers are allowed to bring onto the aircraft and keep with them in the cabin during the flight.

What is the difference between infant, children, and adult tickets?

Infants under the age of 2 should purchase an infant ticket. Children between the ages of 2 and 12 should purchase a child ticket. All other passengers should purchase an adult ticket.

What are the specific requirements for carry-on luggage?

Airlines may have different regulations, but generally, each piece of carry-on luggage must not exceed the dimensions of 20×40×55 centimetres (8×16×22 inches) and should weigh less than five kilograms (about 11 pounds) in total. Any items that exceed these limits will be considered checked luggage. First-class passengers holding adult or child tickets are allowed to bring two pieces of carry-on luggage. Business or economy class passengers are only permitted one piece.

What is the maximum standard for checked luggage?

Each piece of checked luggage should not exceed 50 kilograms in weight (110 pounds) and the dimensions of 40×60×100 centimetres (16×24×39 inches). Different airlines provide different allowances for free checked luggage, ranging from 0 to 40 kilograms, depending on the class of the ticket. Any excess weight will incur an additional fee.

Can an infant ticket holder have free checked luggage?

No, only passengers holding adult or child tickets are entitled to a certain amount of free checked luggage.

What are the limitations of free checked luggage?

Airline companies have varying limitations for free checked luggage, and some low-cost airlines may not offer free checked luggage at all. Passengers should confirm the specific limitations of their airline when booking tickets. The following limitations generally apply to most domestic flights:

  • Cabin Class Maximum Total Weight Maximum Number of Items
  • First Class (F) 40 kilograms (88 pounds) Two pieces
  • Business Class (C) 30 kilograms (66 pounds) One piece
  • Economy Class (Y) 20 kilograms (44 pounds) One piece
What happens if my baggage allowance exceeds the free checked limitation?

If your baggage exceeds the free checked luggage allowance, you will be required to pay an additional fee based on the distance and weight. Generally, each kilogram (2.2 pounds) costs 1.5% of a full economy-class airfare (one-way, adult ticket).

Can I put money in my checked luggage?

No. Currency, important documents, fragile items and other valuables are not allowed in checked luggage. In case of loss or damage, the carrier will compensate only for the common checked luggage liability, with no coverage for valuables.

Can I bring a lithium battery as checked baggage?

According to the most recent information from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), lithium batteries commonly used in laptops, cell phones, and digital cameras are not allowed to be transported as checked baggage. However, passengers are permitted to bring them as carry-on items. Passengers can bring a maximum of two spare batteries as carry-on items, and they must be properly stored to prevent short-circuiting. It is important to note that no lithium batteries are allowed in checked baggage.

Note: China has banned Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 on all flights, even if the device is turned off.

What about my portable power bank? Can I bring it with me? In checked baggage or carry-on baggage?

According to the 2014 regulation of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, portable power banks with a capacity of 160wh are prohibited on board. Each passenger is allowed to bring a maximum of two power banks. The power banks must be for personal use only and can only be placed in passengers’ carry-on baggage. Passengers are not allowed to use the power banks during the flight.

Are liquid items allowed in carry-on baggage?

No. Passengers travelling on domestic flights are not permitted to carry liquids in their carry-on baggage. However, these items can be transported as checked baggage as long as they are packed in accordance with the relevant civil aviation transport regulations.

Is there any restriction on cosmetics?

Passengers are allowed to bring small quantities of cosmetics, with a limit of one item of each type. Each container must not exceed 100 ml in volume. All cosmetics must be placed in a separate bag for inspection. Passengers transferring from international flights to domestic flights in China are allowed to bring unopened duty-free liquid items in properly sealed transparent plastic bags, provided that the relevant receipts are presented.

As a mother travelling with an infant. Can she bring milk for her baby in her carry-on baggage?

No, but passengers travelling with infants can request free liquid dairy products provided by the airlines when purchasing tickets.

As a diabetic. Can someone bring his or her liquid medications on the plane?

Liquid medications necessary for diabetes or other medical conditions will be subject to security inspection and will be kept by the airline crew.

Someone purchased a cat in China. Can he or she bring it with them while travelling within the country? Do airports allow the transportation of animals?

Yes. However, you must ensure that the animal you are bringing is domestically raised and is a pet
