When is the best time to experience festivals in Tibet?

The festival season begins with Losar (Tibetan New Year) in February and continues through summer with celebrations such as Saga Dawa, Gyantse Horse Racing Festival, and the Ganden Thangka Display Festival. If you’re looking for spiritual ceremonies, choose Saga Dawa. For colorful cultural performances and local festivities, Losar and Gyantse Horse Racing Festival are excellent choices.

Which Tibetan festival is the most important?

Losar is Tibet’s biggest celebration, marking the Tibetan New Year with family gatherings, monastery ceremonies, and traditional performances. For many Buddhists, however, Saga Dawa is the holiest festival, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Buddha. Each festival offers a unique perspective on Tibetan culture and spirituality.

Do I need a Tibet Travel Permit?

Yes. All international travelers must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit before entering Tibet. The permit is arranged by your licensed Tibet travel agency as part of your tour. Depending on your itinerary, additional permits may also be required for destinations such as Everest Base Camp or Mount Kailash, and we will handle those arrangements for you.

Can I travel independently during Tibetan festivals?

No. Independent travel in Tibet is not permitted for international visitors. You must travel with an authorized local travel agency, a licensed Tibetan guide, and a pre-approved itinerary. Joining a festival tour is the easiest and most convenient way to experience Tibet’s major celebrations.

Are festival dates the same every year?

Most Tibetan festivals follow the traditional Tibetan lunar calendar, so the dates change each year when converted to the Gregorian calendar. Our 2026 festival tours are scheduled according to the officially announced festival dates to ensure you experience the celebrations at the right time.

Will the festivals be crowded?

Major festivals attract thousands of pilgrims and local Tibetans, creating a vibrant and authentic atmosphere. Some popular sites, especially during Losar and Saga Dawa, can be busy, but our carefully planned itineraries help you enjoy the celebrations while avoiding unnecessary congestion whenever possible.

Can I attend monastery ceremonies as a visitor?

Yes. Visitors are welcome to observe many public ceremonies respectfully. Your Tibetan guide will explain local customs, appropriate behavior, and the spiritual significance of the rituals, helping you enjoy a meaningful cultural experience while respecting local traditions.

Can I combine a festival tour with Everest Base Camp or Mount Kailash?

Yes. Many of our itineraries combine major festivals with Tibet’s most iconic destinations, including Everest Base Camp, Lake Manasarovar, Mount Kailash, Namtso Lake, Gyantse, and Shigatse, allowing you to experience both Tibet’s spectacular landscapes and its living traditions in one unforgettable journey.
