Unknown Mystical Beauty of Mustang: A 16-Day Himalayan Adventure

Mustang, also known as “སྨོན་ཐང་།” in Tibetan, is a region of profound culture and breathtaking scenery. It gained international recognition as one of the world’s top travel destinations in 2013 by Lonely Planet, and in 2023, CNN crowned it the best travel destination. This version of the travel plan is based on the experiences of seven trips to Mustang, offering updated insights and images.

1. Where is Mustang?

Mustang, specifically referring to Upper Mustang, is situated in Nepal, nestled deep in the Himalayan valleys. It shares its northern border with Zhongba County in Tibet, connecting Tibet to the South Asian continent via a historic trade route. Mustang has a rich cultural history spanning 1,200 years, with a history of nearly 700 years of founding. It was opened to the public in 1992, but a visit requires an expensive license ($500 for 10 days, $50 per day beyond).

Prior to 2008, only a few hundred tourists ventured to Mustang each year. Even today, the average annual number of tourists is only about 3,000, while the nearby Annapurna trekking route attracts over 100,000 tourists annually. Notably, fewer Chinese tourists visit Mustang, ranging from 35 in 2015 to 85 in 2018, with these numbers remaining consistently low. This article promises to provide rich, in-depth content to unveil the true essence of Mustang.

2. Why go to Mustang?

A visit to Mustang offers a unique and thrilling experience, unlike any other. Often overshadowed by stereotypes of being a “mysterious kingdom,” it’s essential to approach Mustang with a deeper understanding of its extraordinary landscapes and rich culture. In a broader context, Mustang is an extension of Greater Tibet, a place of immense significance to Tibetan culture and geography.

Beyond national borders, regions like Ladakh, Zanskar, Mustang, and Spiti maintain strong historical and cultural ties to Tibet. These areas not only share a cultural and religious bond with Tibet but also boast remarkable cultural and artistic achievements. Mustang, in particular, is a treasure trove of Tibetan culture, customs, and art, making it a must-visit destination.
