The Gyantse Dama Horse Race Festival has been celebrated since the 15th century, and it occurs when the meadow becomes verdant and luxuriant. Many equestrians adorn themselves and their horses to participate in the exciting horse races.
The yearly equestrian festival is held during the sixth month of the Tibetan calendar. The myth suggests that the Gyantse Prince Gungsang Rabten started this event in memory of his father. Initially, it was a primarily religious ceremony with a few amusements. Later on, horse racing, archery, wrestling, and shooting were added. Presently, there are also performances of Tibetan Opera, music and dance, track and field, and ball games. Additionally, there is a bazaar and an open marketplace to purchase authentic Tibetan handicrafts and a picnic where you can relish Tibetan cuisine with welcoming local Tibetans.
Gyantse is located in a valley between towering mountains, about 245 kilometres southwest of Lhasa. Compared to other areas of Tibet, it retains more of the traditional way of life because Gyantse has managed to hold onto its small-town charisma and relaxed ambience. There are numerous attractions to explore in and around Gyantse, such as Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse Dzong, and Palkhor Monastery on the northern side of Gyantse.
